Get the GM in place first, and they can then have input into the manager. There was not much more said on potential candidates: it looks (sensibly) to be a case of working from the top-down. He will not be a candidate for the managerial position as Kendrick said, La Russa doesn’t have “anything left to prove” as a manager. Kendrick called La Russa “an icon of the game” and said that the results here in Arizona do not change that. Tony La Russa’s role is still to be decided, and will be the subject of “discussion” over the next few days. He also noted that 16 general managers had been hired since Dave Stewart came on board for Arizona, though that did come after a long period of stability across the business. We've made some bad choices."īut he also defended the team’s record against their rivals with similar resources: “When you compare us with our peers in the western division, we've competed very well with San Diego and Colorado.” He seemed in particular to single out the Rockies for criticism, saying that continuity in Colorado had produced seven losing seasons in a row. Kendrick took responsibility:, saying "It starts with me. Ken Kendrick stated that “It's a results business,” and they were looking, not just at the straight W/L record, but that they “did not see the trend line moving in the right direction,” and weren’t comfortable with where the franchise was going.
